Miklos Marschall

Miklos Marschall (1953) founding executive director of CIVICUS (1994-98) is retired and lives in Budapest, Hungary. After CIVICUS, for 18 years until his retirement in 2018, served in various executive leadership positions of the International Secretariat of Transparency International (TI) in Berlin, Germany. Prior to CIVICUS, between 1991- 1994, he served as Deputy Mayor of Budapest, responsible for arts, culture, education and tourism. Beforehand, he worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Culture in Budapest pioneering studies on financing of culture and the non-profit sector. Throughout his professional career, Mr. Marschall has served on the boards of several international and Hungarian NGOs and foundations including ICNL (International Center for Not-for-Profit Law), ECNL, Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO), Accountable Now, Hungarian Nonprofit Information and Training Center (NIOK), etc. Currently, he serves on the boards of NIOK, and the Carpathian Foundation.

Mr. Marschall graduated from the Karl Marx (currently Corvinus) University of Economics in Budapest in 1977, received his doctorate from the same university in 1984. In 1985, he was a Salzburg Seminar fellow, in 1988/89, he was a Fulbright fellow at Yale studying the US nonprofit sector.
